Barry is Bad News for Council Oversight

Council Chair-elect Kwame Brown announced committee assignments today. The poorly regarded Committee on Aging and Community Affairswill be chaired by Marion Barry. Generally considered the least desirable committee on the Council, the committee does have jurisdiction over the Office of LGBT Affairs and the Office of Human Rights. These are two of the most important administrative offices for gay rights issues.

Marion Barry once had a respectable record on LGBT issues. Then the cocaine and crooked dealings over-ran his life and his politics. On April 28, 2009 Barry joined Harry Jackson in an anti-gay rally opposing the marriage recognition bill. Speaking at that sort of rally would have been very bad, but Barry went one up and led the crowd in an anti-gay chant.

"I am a politician that is moral." What a great line from Barry without even a hint of irony. At about the same time he was funneling no-bid and no-accounting contracts to his mistress and then made her give him the money.

Barry didn't mere oppose us. He campaigned against us. Barry has denied that he ever appeared at this rally. He doesn't seem to understand that there is video and websites like YouTube to watch it.

Barry would like us to ignore his votes against the humanity of gay people. He says we shouldn't make it a litmus test. Campaigning against us is another matter.

Perhaps Barry will drop his campaigning against us and work for human rights again. I'm just going to put off legislation I'd like to get passed until he is no longer in charge. Any bets on whether he is ousted from losing an election or being convicted?
