Moonlight: stellar in every respect

Yesterday I saw Barry Jenkins's film Moonlight, based on the play by Tarell Alvin McCraney. It is stellar in every respect, from the screenplay and cinematography to the score and the acting. This is a Best Picture contender. Perhaps the most amazing performance among the excellent cast is by Alex R. Hibbert, who plays 9-year-old Chiron in the first section. He conveys a great deal with very little dialog. This is a movie that calls for multiple viewings.

Human Rights Campaign drops Mark Kirk, now supports Tammy Duckworth

Better late than never. Kirk's despicable attack on Duckworth's military heritage was no slip of the tongue. Many of us urged HRC to rescind its endorsement of Kirk. It did, and I thank them.

Michelle Obama in Manchester

Speaking Thursday at a rally for Hillary Clinton in Manchester, New Hampshire, First Lady Michelle Obama eviscerated the Republican nominee for president without mentioning his name. As my friend Robert Naylor said, this was "another master class in political discourse." I cried as I watched her speak. This impassioned speech is one of the most powerful I have seen. Brava and thanks to her for this needed voice of passion and decency. We can do this.

Many of us watching the second debate Sunday night had the same thought as Trump threatened to jail Hillary. We don't do that in this country. America is not Venezuela.

Frank-Kameny-007

Late on Tuesday evening, October 11, 2011, after a GLAA meeting, I had the unhappy duty to report the death of gay rights pioneer Frank Kameny. It was National Coming Out Day.

His legacy continues.
